Ensuring Learning Never Stops: Portakabin Supporting Schools Affected by RAAC

In recent months, the discovery of reinforced autoclaved aerated concrete (RAAC) in over 230 schools across England has presented an unprecedented challenge to the education sector. With 119 schools earmarked for rebuilding and 110 set to receive removal grants, the implications are far-reaching, threatening health and safety, disrupting education, and impacting the reputation of affected schools.

For over 60 years Portakabin has been a trusted partner in supporting schools during emergencies. Drawing on our expertise in delivering customised, high-quality facilities, we are now assisting schools affected by RAAC issues. Whether it’s emergency classrooms or large-scale modular solutions, Portakabin is committed to keeping education uninterrupted, even in the face of significant challenges.

The RAAC Crisis

The sudden identification of RAAC has forced schools to close sections of their buildings, relocate students and staff, and, in some cases, face the emotional and logistical toll of partial closures.

The fallout goes beyond structural concerns. Parents worry about the safety of their children, staff face increased stress, and communities feel the ripple effects of disrupted education and damaged reputations. Immediate action is essential to safeguard students and maintain public confidence.

Myton School

Portakabin has been at the forefront of supporting RAAC-affected schools, offering tailored solutions that prioritise safety, speed, and seamless integration into the school environment.

For example Myton School was heavily impacted by RAAC and faced the daunting task of relocating 800 students and staff while maintaining its wide-ranging curriculum. The Department for Education (DfE) partnered with Portakabin to provide temporary facilities that met the school’s specific needs.

In just 31 weeks, we delivered 92 modular buildings to create modern, fit-for-purpose teaching spaces including:

  • maths and language classrooms
  • art and photography studios
  • a large library
  • a dedicated music block equipped with classrooms, practice rooms, and offices.

The project was executed with precision, ensuring minimal disruption to students’ learning. Our team worked within a segregated area of the school to install fully fitted-out facilities complete with furniture, plumbing, and groundworks. The result? A vibrant, functional temporary school that allows Myton students to thrive while their permanent building is constructed.

Myton School’s story is just one example of how Portakabin steps in to turn crises into opportunities for progress. Portakabin has also provided critical support to schools like Ellesmere Port and Scalby, ensuring students can continue their education in safe, high-quality environments. Each project is unique, but our commitment to excellence remains the same.
