So often SEND and Additional Learning Needs (ALN) are extremely diverse and there is no one size fits all, which is where Catch Up® interventions are ideally placed to support the needs of individual learners.

Both Catch Up® Literacy and Catch Up® Numeracy are needs led, process-based interventions and as such are highly adaptable to meet the specific needs of the individual learners, particularly those with SEND and ALN.

In supporting struggling learners the process always begins with the individual learner and where they are on their learning journey. By looking carefully at what the learner is already confident in, as well as where they may be facing challenges, gives the supporting adult the opportunity to recognise what will work best for the learner.  This aspect of the interventions is what makes Catch Up® well suited for learners with more complex needs.

Both of the Catch Up® interventions take an individualised approach, in order to meet the needs of each learner.

This approach is achieved in many different ways:

  • By the supporting adult – who builds a positive working relationship with the learner, enabling them to provide appropriate learning experiences
  • By the working environment – learners are supported by having a quieter, less distracting space, on a one-to-one basis with a known adult
  • By the structure of the session – each session has a very clear focus, which is tailored to meet the gaps in understanding
  • By the activities undertaken – including learners reflecting back on their previous learning, clear adult models, introducing resources and texts, and using strategies which gently nudge the learner to increasing independence
  • By the resources used – all resources used in supporting the learner are chosen with their specific needs in mind. The resources provided by Catch Up® are designed to be adaptable.
  • By the feedback given – all feedback is immediate and tailored to the specific needs of the learner knowing how they understand and respond to the language used
  • By the opportunities to succeed – learners are able to share their success in individual sessions and relate this to their next steps in learning including how to transfer their new found knowledge and confidence in all areas of their life

Support your SEND / ALN learners with the evidence-based Catch Up® Interventions

Catch Up® interventions have been used extensively with children of both primary and secondary age, with a wide variety of needs. Research shows that learners on Catch Up® achieve more than double the progress of typically developing learners.

The Catch Up® Literacy and Catch Up® Numeracy interventions are both based on rigorous academic research and are targeted to the needs of individual learners.  They are both integrated training and resource packages that involve 15-minute individual sessions delivered twice a week by Catch Up® trained teaching assistants, teachers, tutors, volunteers or mentors. Catch Up® interventions are available for a one-off cost and trained supporting adults are able to work with any number of learners. Catch Up® has now trained over 36,000 supporting adults and it is estimated over half a million struggling learners have benefitted from receiving the Catch Up® interventions over 25 years.

Catch Up® is a not-for-profit charity registered in England and Wales (1072425) and Scotland (SC047557); and Catch Up is a registered trademark.
