When MPs debate grammar schools — Our 10-point guide to today’s Westminster motion

In Parliament this morning, Conservative MP for Gainsborough Sir Edward Leigh, proposed a motion to end imbalances in grammar funding.

The majority of the debate, however, focused on the benefits (or otherwise) of grammar schools. Our reporter, Freddie Whittaker, was live-tweeting. Here’s his 10-point summary of the arguments.

  1. Being a parent and a teacher in a grammar school system I do not like how they are tested . Exams take place the first week back in September, therefore ‘those that can afford ‘ will use their summer holiday hot housing their child with hours of tutoring to pass the test. Whilst ‘those that can’t afford’ are left to do the test on ability alone. A fair system?
