An MP had strong words for education secretary Nicky Morgan after she wrote to him claiming free schools are better than ‘council-run’ schools.
Ms Morgan wrote to Greenwich and Woolwich MP Nick Raynsford on Monday as David Cameron announced plans for 49 new free schools.
One of the schools is planned for Greenwich and Woolwich, so Ms Morgan asked Mr Raynsford to confirm his commitment to the school.
In her letter, she wrote that free schools are more likely to be judged outstanding than other local schools and claimed they are outperforming schools overseen by the local council.
It prompted a feisty response from Mr Raynsford who said the only free school in his area was told it requires improvement by Ofsted last year.
“By contrast, community schools in the area have demonstrated very significant improvements in performance over the last decade with a high proportion now rated good or outstanding by Ofsted,” he added.
