Don’t cancel sports days on our account, DfE tells schools

School sports days can still go ahead with parents in attendance, the Department for Education has insisted, following reports that some settings have called off the events.

The DfE said today it was aware of cancellations citing Covid guidance, but said this “needn’t be the case in most circumstances”.

School leaders were advised earlier this month that sports day events can go ahead but “pupils and students must remain in their bubbles, and early years children should remain in their consistent groups as is usual for your setting.”

Sports equipment should be cleaned regularly throughout the day and “spectators must adhere to current social distancing requirements”.

Spectators can gather in separate groups of up to 30, but multiple groups are permitted providing they are not allowed to mix.

In a blog post published last week, the DfE said it was “up to schools to risk assess their sports day plans and decide if it is appropriate to invite spectators”.
