Ministers plan to clarify guidance on work experience after schools and employers were left “scratching their heads” over whether they will need to seek DBS checks for staff hosting placements.

New keeping children safe in education guidance states that offering “teaching, training, instruction or care or supervision” for work placements for under 16s “frequently” or for longer than three days in a thirty-day period counts as “regulated activity”.

Those supervising work placements were previously exempt, but this changed following the passage of the Crime and Policing Act, which came into force last month.
