Government officials considered launching their own in-house management information system (MIS) for schools in a bid to shield them from a £200 million turf war.

This comes amid warnings leaders have been left in the dark over the Department for Education’s MIS framework and “data spine”, despite fears the “limitless” information it would transfer from schools to Whitehall could be exposed to hackers.

Jon Coles, the chief executive of the United Learning Trust, whose academy chain is the largest in England, has urged ministers to tear up the proposals – which, he said, had been drawn up “in the most covert way possible”.
