More than 80 academy trusts named for submitting spending data late

More than 80 academy trusts that submitted financial information late have today been named by the government as part of its latest academies transparency drive.

A government release published today revealed that 97 per cent of trusts submitted financial returns to the government on time for the 2017-18 academic year.

However 88 trusts – three per cent of those nationally – failed to file two or more financial returns to the government on time.

One of the trusts, Teddington School, failed to submit on time all four financial returns – listed as the accounts return, financial statements, and two budget forecast return documents.

It was the only trust to miss all four deadlines.

It is the first time the government has published the names of the trusts, and is the latest step in a transparency drive that includes a clampdown on related-party transactions. Education secretary Damian Hinds announced earlier this year that trusts will have to get government approval for such transactions over £20,000 from next April.

Today, academies minister Lord Agnew said the government had “made sure that increased autonomy is supported with increased transparency”, adding: “And this transparency means that we know and can take action where trusts are not following the clear rules we have laid down.”

He said providing financial returns helps the government scrutinise the financial health of academies is robust, and they “continue to be more transparent in their reporting than local authority schools”.

Agnew added: “It’s encouraging that the overwhelming majority reported on time, and we are taking action in the small number of cases where we find that this has not happened.”

The government is also due to publish its second academies annual report later today. The document will reveal details of the expenditure and performance of the country’s 7,000 academies.
