Former secondary school English teacher Margaret Greenwood has been appointed as shadow schools minister in Sir Keir Starmer’s first frontbench reshuffle.
The MP for Wirral West, who served as shadow work and pensions secretary under Jeremy Corbyn, replaces Mike Kane, who has moved to become a shadow transport minister.
It follows the appointment on Monday of Rebecca Long-Bailey, the former Labour leadership contender, as shadow education secretary.
Also joining her team will be Toby Perkins, taking on a new brief for apprenticeships and lifelong learning.
Tulip Siddiq, previously the shadow early years minister, has now also taken on the shadow children’s minister brief following Steve Reed’s promotion to shadow communities secretary.
Emma Hardy, a former teacher, NUT organiser and Schools Week contributor, remains shadow minister for further education and universities.
Angela Rayner, the former shadow education secretary who was elected as Labour’s new deputy leader on Saturday, has been appointed shadow first secretary of state, meaning she will deputise for Starmer at prime minister’s questions.
