‘Back-door selection’ fears as DfE roped into bitter admissions row

Councils seek varying information on pupils before making decisions on school places, new research finds

Whitehall mandarins fear councils could be breaking admissions rules by gathering in-depth records on children’s behaviour, a Schools Week investigation has uncovered.

Most admissions take place at the start of reception and year 7, but youngsters can also move outside these windows through in-year transfers.

Schools can issue rejections to the latter if they have “good reason” to believe the child may display “challenging behaviour” – but it is unclear which details should be used to decide this.
