Young people are already using AI, but confidence with technology does not always mean understanding it. Natalie Moore, CEO of Apps for Good, argues that the future of AI education lies in moving beyond fear and uncertainty, towards curiosity, creativity and responsible creation.

Preparing the next generation for an AI-shaped world

The reality is that AI is already part of young people’s everyday lives. Algorithms shape what they see online, chatbots are becoming everyday tools, and deepfakes are blurring the lines between what is real and what is generated.

Nearly 70% of young people already use AI tools every day, while 94% can imagine themselves in a future role involving AI, according to The AI Readiness Gap Starts Early Report.

But being surrounded by technology is not the same as understanding it.

Many young people are using AI without fully understanding how it works, the limitations of its outputs or the wider impact it can have. Questions around bias, misinformation, privacy and ethics are becoming increasingly urgent as these technologies become part of everyday life. While confidence is growing, responsible use remains a challenge: LEGO Education found that 79% of students feel confident using AI, yet 63% do not know how to use it responsibly.

This gap matters. We need to help learners move beyond seeing AI as simply a tool for quick answers, generated content or completing homework, and instead empower them to understand, question and create with technology in meaningful ways.

For schools, this presents a significant challenge. Most educators recognise the importance of preparing learners for a future shaped by AI, but many are navigating questions around safety, ethics, confidence and expertise – while finding the time and resources to introduce AI learning effectively.

The answer is not to create more fear around AI, but to help young people and educators build confidence and understanding. This means creating opportunities for learners to explore how AI works, understand its impact and use it purposefully to solve problems and create solutions, while developing the creativity, critical thinking and collaboration skills that AI cannot replace.

 

From abstract theory to project-based learning

If we want young people to move beyond simply consuming technology, they need opportunities to experiment, question and create with it.

Many young people encounter AI every day without asking the important questions: How does it work? Who built it? Can I trust it?

Project-based learning moves AI and computing beyond abstract theory, connecting learning to real-world challenges that young people care about. It gives students the opportunity to apply their knowledge, test ideas, create solutions and understand the impact of the technology they develop.

By connecting computing with different contexts and areas of learning, students begin to see technology as something they can shape – not just consume.

This approach gives young people greater agency in the classroom. It encourages them to collaborate, ask questions, solve problems and make thoughtful decisions about how technology should be used. As the LEGO Group puts it, “Great minds don’t think alike. They think together.”

When learning feels relevant and purposeful, engagement grows. Students move from passive users of technology to active creators who can use their skills to make a positive impact.

 

AI education must keep humans at the heart

As AI becomes more capable, the skills young people need are evolving. It is no longer just about what learners can build, but how they think, question and create.

Technical fluency is still important, but it is not enough on its own. The uniquely human skills that help us think critically, collaborate, communicate, create and make ethical decisions will be vital for the next generation.

Research from The Essential Skills Advantage – Human Skills in an Age of AI highlights that technical skills alone are not enough; young people also need the uniquely human capabilities that cannot be easily automated. Similarly, the Essential Skills Tracker 2025 found that higher levels of essential skills are associated with greater AI adoption, higher wages and stronger readiness for technological change.

Keeping humans at the heart of technology means helping learners maintain their curiosity, creativity and judgement when working with AI tools. It means ensuring they understand not only what AI can do, but when and how it should be used.

By developing a dual skillset of computing knowledge and essential life skills, young people can work confidently alongside AI, make responsible decisions and carry purposeful learning into their future careers and communities.

 

From classroom concepts to real-world application

Preparing young people for their futures cannot sit with schools alone. It’s a shared responsibility between home, school and industry too.

Industry engagement helps bridge the gap between what learners experience in lessons and how knowledge, skills and technology are applied in real-world settings. As highlighted in Skills England’s Annual Skills Report 2026, “close and ongoing collaboration with employers is central to improving the skills system.”

For young people, seeing technology in action and meeting the people behind it can transform how they view their own potential. Exposure to diverse role models, career pathways and lived experiences helps broaden aspirations, challenge stereotypes and show every young person – regardless of background – that they have a place in shaping the future of technology.

These experiences also help young people understand that technology is not limited to a small number of “techie careers”. From healthcare and creative industries to business and social impact, computing skills are increasingly important across almost every sector.

By connecting classroom learning with real-world experiences, students can see the relevance of what they are learning, understand where their skills could take them and begin to imagine themselves as part of the future workforce.

 

A new approach to computing education

Computing education is evolving – not away from technical learning, but towards an approach that is more connected, applied and human.

With upcoming curriculum changes placing greater emphasis on creativity, oracy and real-world application, schools need approaches that help learners build the knowledge, skills and confidence to navigate a changing world.

The next step is creating opportunities for young people to understand how technology works, question its impact and use it purposefully to create solutions.

Together, project-based learning, skills development and industry engagement create a powerful approach that gives young people the relevance, confidence and agency to connect what they learn in the classroom with real-world challenges and opportunities. By bringing these elements together, we can help ensure every young person has the capability to participate in and contribute to the future of technology.

These principles underpin AI for Good 2.0 – our free new computing course for learners aged 11–14, informed by feedback from educators, students and our wider community. Built around what teachers and learners told us they need, it helps schools introduce AI in ways that are practical, engaging and meaningful.

Through hands-on, project-based learning, students design and build AI-powered apps that tackle real-world challenges while developing both computing knowledge and the essential life skills needed to use technology responsibly and creatively.

Flexible, modular delivery, a choice of JavaScript coding or AI-assisted (vibe) coding with Canva Code, embedded industry engagement and a strong focus on ethics, creativity and social impact make the course adaptable to a wide range of school settings.
