The schools minister Georgia Gould has been re-appointed as a Department for Education minister in Andy Burnham’s government, with her exact brief unconfirmed. The MP for Queen’s Park and Maida Vale, a former Camden council leader and ally of the former prime minister Keir Starmer, took on the schools brief last September. Tonight, Downing Street has confirmed she “will remain as minister of state in the Department for Education”. In a reshuffle, the government usually first announces to which departments junior ministers have been appointed, or re-appointed. Their exact role and responsibilities are usually confirmed at a later date. At this point, Gould’s role remains unconfirmed. Skills minister Jacqui Smith, a member of the House of Lords, has also been re-appointed as a DfE minister. It is understood she will retain her previous brief. Gould replaced Catherine McKinnell last year in a shake-up of Starmer’s team. The future of children’s minister Josh MacAlister and early education minister Olivia Bailey is yet to be confirmed. It comes after Lucy Powell, the Labour deputy leader, former shadow education secretary and ex-leader of the House of Commons, replaced their boss Bridget Phillipson as education secretary last night. Like Phillipson, Gould was at the centre of many critical Labour reforms, including sweeping changes to the system for supporting children with special educational needs and disabilities, the recently-passed children’s wellbeing and schools act and the curriculum review. This is a breaking news story and will be updated.
